Adventure Respite

Equinox Counseling and Wellness Center offers Adventure Respite camp weekends (two nights, two days) for youth and teens. This is a strength-based program designed and sequenced to be fun, build confidence, increase pro-social competence, and provide opportunities for independence outdoors and away from parental relationships, as well as social learning outlets in a fun camp setting.

Adventure Respite fosters and helps kids develop peer friendships and social skills by providing a highly supportive and encouraging environment. Through adventure, play and camp living activities, they get to practice effective communication, listening skills, giving and getting trust, self advocacy, cooperation, group play, problem solving and other important life skills. Skills are taught through a tried-and-true process designed to mirror everyday life, situations and relationships with the goal of providing youth and teens with repetition and practice needed to be able to generalize learned skills back to their natural, home environment.

Fun, challenging Adventure Respite camp activities are designed to inspire kids and to encourage their recreational and leisure interests. Activities vary but can include:

  • High and low ropes course
  • Fishing
  • Rock climbing
  • Campfire activities
  • Stand-up paddle boarding
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • GPS scavenger hunt
  • Music
  • Storytelling
  • Movie under the stars
  • Problem solving games
  • Camp skills
  • Expressive arts

Youth and teens that participate in this weekend program generally include teenagers navigating social or personal difficulties related to:

  • High Functioning Autism
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Learning differences
  • Social awkwardness
  • Self-esteem deficits
  • Intellectual Delays
  • Anxiety
  • Low social and interpersonal relationship skills

The young people that come to Adventure Respite are typically developing socially and emotionally at a different pace than their peers. They are interesting kids, often functioning at a high intellectual level, but may be a little quirky or just generally have a difficult time fitting in with the rest of the crowd. These kids, if you read our founders letter, are usually the ones that are not asked to weekend sleepovers or peer birthday parties and often stay clear of those after school kickball games and other group games. Adventure Respite gives them a wonderful, safe place to:

  • Learn and practice situational coping skills
  • Learn to communicate effectively
  • Build a peer and friend community base
  • Improve social and group functioning skills
  • Practice giving and getting trust
  • Discover individual strengths

Adventure Respite provides a great opportunity for parents, family members, foster parents and other care givers to take a well-deserved weekend off, knowing their kids are in the care of highly trained professionals, are safe, and are out having a blast with peers their own age. Our 3:1 youth–to-counselor ratio ensures safety, individual attention and the needed accommodation to provide a memorable experience that has meaning far beyond just going to camp or a weekend event.

Our Fall 2014 Adventure Respite weekend will be held December 20-21, 2014. If you would more information, please contact us online or call us at 303-861-1916.
